From risk budget to lot size

Start with the amount at risk

Balance multiplied by risk percentage gives your cash budget. Divide that by the estimated loss per lot at the stop, including costs. The result is rounded down to the permitted lot step so rounding never increases your chosen risk.

A EUR/USD example

A USD 10,000 balance at 1% risk gives a USD 100 budget. With a 20-pip stop, one standard lot risks USD 200 before costs. The calculated size is therefore 0.50 lots.

Enter a distance or two prices

Use a stop distance in pips, or enter the entry and stop prices. The absolute distance works for both long and short positions. The supported Forex pairs use a 0.0001 pip, or 0.01 when JPY is the quote currency.

Match the CFD to your contract

For metals, indices and crypto CFDs, one point means a 1.0 price move. Its cash value per lot depends on the contract. Choose a compatible broker profile or enter your own multiplier and profit currency. A lot is not the same size across all brokers.

Include costs once

Open Costs and contract specifications to check round-trip commissions, extra spread, minimum lot and lot step. Add only costs not already reflected in your prices. Cent accounts and non-standard contracts also need the correct units per lot and real currency amounts.

Check the rate and available margin

Where needed, the tool converts pip value into your account currency using a dated daily reference. You can enter your broker's rate instead. The result sizes estimated stop risk; it does not check free margin or whether your broker will accept the order.
