TotalTrade Journal: platforms, connections and import formats

The eleven file import providers in the TotalTrade Journal, export formats, and MT5 and cTrader account connections. A guide for each workflow.

Updated 4 min read

In the TotalTrade Journal, you can connect a MetaTrader 5 or cTrader account, or import a file exported from a supported platform. The workflow depends on your trading platform; the broker’s name alone does not identify the right method.

1. Start with the import method

The Importa da file (import from file) panel contains the eleven providers in the table. MetaTrader5 and cTrader also offer account connections, configured in Crea Nuovo Storico (new track record) with Connetti Account in Tempo Reale (connect a live account).

2. Identify the platform, server and account

The same broker may offer several platforms and account types. Before connecting your journal, confirm:

  • the actual platform (MT5, cTrader or another);
  • the account's server, which must match exactly on MT5;
  • the account whose history you want to analyse.

Then follow the specific guide: connect MetaTrader 5 or connect cTrader. There are dedicated guides for FTMO and Interactive Brokers as well.

For MT5, use the investor password to provide read-only access. For cTrader, use Seleziona Account (select account) and follow the app’s workflow. Check your broker or prop firm’s conditions before connecting the account.

3. Check your data after the first import

After importing, compare a few trades with the original report:

  • symbol and direction;
  • size and prices;
  • open and close times;
  • commissions and swaps, separately;
  • net result.

If a trade shows a $50 gross profit, $7 in commissions and a $1 swap charge, the net must be $42 in both systems.

4. Watch out for partials, time zones, currencies and duplicates

Partial closes. A position closed in three steps may show up as several executions. Before assuming data is missing, check whether you're counting orders, executions or aggregated positions. They're different units and produce different totals.

Time zones and daylight saving. Note the report's time zone and the journal's. A trade near midnight can land on a different day and change daily statistics, even though the execution time is identical. Europe and the US switch to daylight saving in different weeks.

Account currency. A result in USD isn't directly comparable to one in EUR without a consistent conversion.

Later reports. Before preparing another file, note the account and period covered by the previous report. Keep the original files so you can trace the imported data.

5. Technical compatibility isn't a broker rating

Compatibility with a journal describes an integration, not the quality or suitability of a broker. The directory doesn't replace comparing the actual conditions of your account. Supported methods can change over time, so always check the current list.

Once your data is verified, move on to analysis: add context with tags and notes, separate strategies and compare like with like. Our guide to analysing your trading journal shows where to start.

FAQ

My broker isn't in the directory. Can I still use the journal?

Identify the account’s platform first. If it uses MetaTrader 5 or cTrader, follow the relevant connection guide. For a file, choose the matching provider from the table and follow its export procedure.

What should I check if the data does not match?

Compare the account, date range and original file contents. Check that you used the provider and report type specified in the guide. For VolSys, timestamps assigned to trades on the same date only preserve their order; they are not actual execution times.

How do I choose between a connection and a file?

For an MT5 or cTrader connection, enable Connetti Account in Tempo Reale (connect a live account) when creating the track record. For a report import, create a manual track record, leave the connection off and use Importa da file (import from file) when editing it.
